Commission for Gender Equality welcomes the appointment of Ms Magwashi Phiyega

12 Jun 2012

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) welcomes the appointment of the first woman National Police Commissioner, Ms Magwashi Victoria Phiyega in the South African Police Services (SAPS).

As an institution tasked to promote gender equality, we firmly believe that the appointment, in so many ways contributes towards gender equality and equity.

We also of the view that this nation, requires the full use of its human resources and talent to achieve the stated twelve outcomes, and also opined that Ms Phiyega’s appointment in the security cluster will affirm the role of women in society.

The CGE therefore hopes that issues of Gender Based Violence, Sexual Harassment, Rape and similar vice shall be given sufficient attention by the incumbent National Commissioner.

It is proper at this stage, to salute, express gratitude to the progressive move by the President and congratulate the National Commissioner in her appointment. We await a more stable police service which will bring about a safer South Africa, in whom all shall prosper without any form of discrimination, including on grounds of gender.
