SACR to host Social Cohesion community dialogues

6 Jun 2012

As a country we use the concept of “social cohesion” to infer how we, as South Africans, strive towards the achievement of national unity and common identity. How we recognise our common humanity in meaningful ways which involve realising basic human needs, such as descent shelter, food, meaningful work, tolerance, respect, family and friendship, is the cardinal goal of social cohesion.

As a nation we do recognise that social cohesion embodies a struggle with dynamic tensions between the realities of social difference and the quest for the attainment of democratic aspiration for social equality and justice.

Some of the realities of social difference in South Africa include issues such as racism, ethnicity, gender and disability and all the kinds of stereotypes which emerge from these issues.

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with the national Department of Arts and Culture will be hosting community dialogues, covering the issues of social cohesion as part of the national roll-out plan, with an intension to address the above values and aspirations.
