Department to host Inaugural Provincial Boxing League Finals
29 May 2012
In February this year the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, launched the Free State Boxing League as part of a programme to revive and promote boxing across the province. This programme aims to provide amateur boxers with a platform to hone and showcase their skills whilst also providing a platform for them to join the professional ranks.
As part of this programme, the first three legs of the league were held in Kroonstad, Bethlehem and Welkom and the boxers who have progressed from these tournaments will compete in the inaugural Free State Boxing League Finals. Through the boxing league tournaments that have been staged, a number of boxers have been selected to undergo training at the provincial High Performance Centre for Boxing in Bloemfontein in 2013.
Hosting the boxing league finals will also be instrumental in the selection of members of the provincial amateur boxing team that will represent the Free State at the National Amateur Boxing Championship to be held from the 2 to 7 of July in Cape Town this year. Those selected for the provincial amateur team will attend a training camp at the high performance centre for boxing prior to the National Amateur Boxing Championship.
The quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the Provincial Boxing League will be held as follows:
Date: 2 to 3 June 2012
Venue: Mehopung Public School (Ficksburg)
This league finals programme takes the Provincial Boxing League programme in the Free State to the next height of development.
Your Media Institution and the public is invited to attend the tournament.
