23 May 2012

About 28 officials from the Department of Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison who enrolled for Adult Basic Education Training on different numeracy, communication and pre-Abet levels passed with flying colours where they obtained 90 percent of pass rate on their final examination.

The officials who are mostly in their fourties and fifties will on Friday receive their Independent Examination Board (IEB) certificates following their outstanding performance during their last year’s final examination.

Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, MEC Nono Maloyi said the certificate presentation to the learners would motivate the concerned officials to further their studies with the programme.

“Education is key to every South African citizen and we all have to hang on to the opportunity of learning while the doors are still wide open. Your acquired literacy skills will enhance your knowledge and empower you to become more productive,” said Maloyi.

These officials are expected to enrolment for 2012/13 financial year to further their studies.

Maloyi said the enrolment of officials on the ABET programme will assist in eradicating literacy in the country as one of the nine priorities of the National Education Strategy.

The enrolment of departmental employees on the ABET programme is consistent with the provision of the South African Constitution which affirms the rights of all citizens to basic education, including Adult Basic Education and Training.

The Department has created the opportunity for all adults officials who want to complete their basic education or want to acquire knowledge in basic reading and writing. The programme geared towards providing basic learning tolls, knowledge and skills.

The enrolled officials were assessed to ensure that they were correctly placed according to their level of understanding as they are now provided with the nationally-recognised qualification. Most of learners enrolled on ABET includes, groundsmen, cleaners, messengers and other low level employees of the department.
