Mthatha weighbridge operational again

22 May 2012

The Mthatha Weighbridge is now operational again following a calibration worth R57 000.

The weigh bridge was last used in August 2010, but the department plans to reopen it in the new financial year.

The purpose of building these centres is to:

1. Manage overloading control effectively as the maintenance costs of roads and bridges are very expensive. A severe damage is caused when a heavy overloaded axle or axle unit of a vehicle put pressure on the foundation layers of the road and as such it is essential to protect the economy of the country.

2. Enforce safety related legislation, by;

  • ensuring the safety of vehicles according to the manufacture’s specifications
  • ensuring the safety of vehicles according to the capacity of tyres.
