Public Protector to conduct preliminary investigations on e-toll system complaints

12 May 2012

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela has decided conduct a preliminary investigation into complaints of allegations of tender irregularities and improper relationship linking the company that won the E-toll system tender with the Arms Deal company.

This followed the complaints lodged by the Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament Jack Bloom, Director for the Institute for Accountability in South Africa, Adv Paul Hoffman and the recently resigned Chief Executive Officer of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), Mr Nazir Alli.

In this regard the Public Protector will be able to determine among others whether no other institution is investigating similar allegations. Thereafter, the Public Protector will determine whether the allegations merit a formal investigation.
