Cabinet approves the hosting of 2013 Afcon and 2014 African Championship

4 May 2012

Cabinet announced the approval for the hosting of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and 2014 African Nations Championship and their respective host cities.

At the Media Briefing held at the Union Buildings today, Minister Fikile Mbalula announced the five cities to host the 2013 African Cup of Nations. "The City of Joburg will host both the Opening and Closing games and ceremonies at Soccer City. The following host cities will host the 2013 Afcon and they will use the 2010 World Cup Stadia, eThekwini (Moses Mabhida), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng), Nelson Mandela Bay (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium) and Mbombela (Mbombela Stadium)," said Minister Mbalula.

Minister Mbalula also announced the 4 host cities for the 2014 African Nations Championship. The four cities, which will not necessarily use the 2010 World Cup Stadia are Polokwane, Cape Town, Kimberly and Mangaung. Mbalula further stated that in the following week, government will meet with Safa and AFCON 2013 Local Organising Committee (LOC), to finalise the composition of the Committee (LOC).

"Safa, like government, will forward names of a team to be part of the LOC. Cabinet has spoken on the government representation in the LOC." added Mbalula.

Cabinet also allayed fears of cities in the hosting of these events. Minister Mbalula stated that a Joint Task Team, consisting of the Departments of Sport and Recreation SA, Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs and National Treasury will meet with the Host Cities individually to ensure all concerns are dealt with.

Cabinet also announced the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Afcon 2013 convened by Sport and Recreation SA. The committee consisting of Home Affairs, Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, International Relations and Corporation, Transport, Public Works, Police, Defence and Military Veterans, Finance, Trade and Industry, Tourism, State Security, Social Development and Communications.
