Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Honourable Tina Joemat-Pettersson to deliver budget vote speech

25 Apr 2012

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Honourable Tina Joemat-Pettersson will deliver her Budget Vote to the National Assembly on 3 May 2012.

The purpose of the Budget Vote is to account for the previous budget allocation and to motivate for the next allocation. The Minister will highlight the past year’s achievements and indicates what the department would focus on during the new financial year in the context of government’s key priorities.

This year the Zero Hunger campaign will be further entrenched in the department’s commitment to improve the lives of communities in terms of food security and job creation issues.

According to the Human Science Research Council of South Africa (HSRC), South Africa ranks among the countries with the highest rate of income inequality on the globe, in comparison to other middle income countries. South Africa has resounding high levels of absolute poverty.

Data shows that approximately 21.9 % of South African households have insufficient or severely insufficient access to food. Additionally, roughly 14 million South Africans are vulnerable to food insecurity.

In 2012, South Africa’s attention remains focused on the Zero Hunger campaign and is reverberated in the context where "South Africa recently launched a new social protection initiative called “Food for All Campaign” inspired by Brazil’s “Zero Hunger strategy”. The campaign intends to tackle some of South Africa’s most pressing.
