Babies swapped at Katleho District Hospital

24 Apr 2012

The Free State Department of Health hereby responds to the allegation of swapping of babies at Katleho Hospital  in Virginia as reported in the Volksblad earlier.

It is confirmed that the incident took place as reported. The department however managed to unite the babies with their real parents after DNA tests were done within 12 hours of the incident. Necessary precautionary tests and  preventive treatment has been administered to the babies to ensure that their wellbeing is not compromised. We are pleased to report that there has not been any negative effects to the affected babies.

The families have been counseled and supported to deal with the incident. Internal disciplinary measures have been initiated towards the involved personnel and measures will be reinforced to prevent similar incidences in all  our facilities.
