MEC Dhlomo qualifes for the 2012 Comrades Marathon

22 Apr 2012

Today, the MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has qualified to run the 2012 Ultimate Human Race (Comrades Marathon) after completing the Chatsworth Freedom Marathon (52 km) in 5 hours 24 minutes.

MEC Dhlomo ran his maiden Comrades race in 2011 as his way of championing the promotion of healthy lifestyles. This, he believes, is very important in ensuring that people live longer and healthy lives. The 53 year old MEC committed to continue running and promoting active and healthy lives in workplaces and communities by walking the talk.

About qualifying MEC Dhlomo says, "Health care cannot be just about treating the sick but must be about helping us to live healthily, this requires more from all of us, individuals, business companies and government. As a people's representative I have taken it upon me to encourage, inform, but, if necessary, in a tougher way than ever before, and to be prepared to act. Action to me means running the Ultimate Human race."

Otherwise, he adds, the alternative will be a future in which the capacity of the public health system to treat us simply won't keep pace with the state of the country's health. The 2012 Comrades will be held on 3 June 2012 and will be down run (from Pietermaritzburg to Durban).
