Labour Minister Oliphant targets North West in a bid to enforce labour laws

18 Apr 2012

The Honourable Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant will take part in a programme of action when she engages in an inspection blitz on the agricultural sector on the farms of North West, which will be followed by a public participation programme (Imbizo) at the Sanieshof on the 20 and 21 April 2012 respectively.

Eight farms in the agriculture, livestock and related sectors have been targeted for inspection to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Labour Relations Act, Employment Equity Act as well as Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

Some of the province’s farms have developed a hostile attitude towards compliance, with known cases of non-co-operation with labour inspectors.

On Friday afternoon after the inspection blitz, Oliphant will hold a media briefing on the outcomes of the blitz inspection.

Meanwhile, local communities will have an opportunity to engage with the Minister on Saturday at the public participation programme (Imbizo) which will be held at the local Township nearby Sanieshof at 9h00, where they will be able to raise their issues regarding their workplaces experiences.

The public participation programme is expected to be attended by other government departments. The departments will also use this opportunity to exhibit and share information about the services they provide.

The aim of the event is to engage all the employees particularly the farm workers by bringing the services of the Department of Labour to the people. The department is striving to promote equal working relations with all its stakeholders to ensure effective service delivery.
