President Zuma to officiate the 2009 World AIDS Day commemoration

29 Nov 2009

President Jacob Zuma will on Tuesday, 1 December 2009, address the nation at the World AIDS Day commemoration event to be held at the Pretoria Showgrounds.

The event will also be attended by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe who chairs the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), as well as Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, other members of SANAC and international agencies.

This year's commemoration is held under the theme: "I am responsible, we are responsible and South Africa is taking responsibility". The day's activities are intended to bring the country together to revitalise the fight against AIDS and take the campaign to higher levels.

The commemoration also underlines the extensive work done by government since 1994 to deal with the scourge of HIV and AIDS. It moves from the premise that while a lot has been done, much more still needs to be done by all South Africans working together in unity.

President Zuma wants to see an enhancement of prevention, treatment, the end of stigma as well as improved care and support for those living with the virus and their families.

The details are as follows:
Date: 1 December 2009
Time: 09h30
Venue: Pretoria Showgrounds

The day's programme will follow on Monday, 30 November 2009.

Kindly RSVP by sending your full names and media house to zingaphi@po.gov.za or sms to 082 766 3940
