Message of condolence from the Minister of Police to the family of the late Captain Jacob Charles Scheepers, Brooklyn, Tshwane

9 Oct 2009

In the language of our forefathers there is an expression that: "The graves of the really brave are by the roadside." Like the courageous soul he was, Captain Jacob Charles Scheepers ended his life doing what he had dedicated his life to fighting crime. Now is the time for all South Africans to stand together against crime, and this is the best memory we can afford this unsung hero who in the first place, put his country's best above his own.

Sometimes in our endeavours and in facing life's challenges, we encounter individuals who inspire us through their leadership and character. These individuals dedicate their lives to the noble cause safeguarding others from harm and hurt. They do this with no expectation of commensurate reward. But at times, even such caring and committed persons are unexpectedly taken away from us. When such acts happen naturally, we do admit and try to understand. However, when such individuals get taken away from us, through senseless and irresponsible acts, it causes unbearable pain.

That is why as Government we would like to reiterate that we will not be derailed by cowardly acts of violence against our members. We have cried enough and therefore we say: no more. We stand here this morning, on behalf of our President, the leadership and staff of Police, with our hearts filled with grief and sadness. Sad at an unfortunate loss of an unsung hero. Captain Scheepers will forever remain our hero. His dedication to his work: that of creating a safer environment is invaluable. His untimely passing is not only a loss to his family, but to all of us.

We regret this unacceptable loss of life and condemn those responsible. We feel robbed of a dedicated and committed member. Our team will never be the same without this brave hero. We are profoundly distressed by the number of our members who have died in the line of duty.

Captain Scheepers' passing away comes barely at a time when our government has been calling for tighter protection of our members against dangerous criminals.

We wish to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fight crime and work towards ensuring a safe environment to the benefit of all South Africans. This is what Captain Scheepers stood for. This is what he dedicated his life to. Let us not forget his invaluable contribution to the fight against crime. Ons prys verbentenis tot die bekamping van misdaad se toewyding en leierskap.

Mag sy siel en vrede rus.
