Address by Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation Mr Gert Oosthuizen at International Institute for Sport Science and Fitness Training-Federation of International Sports, Aerobics and Fitness National Championships

6 Aug 2011

Programme Director
President of IIFT-FISAF (International Institute for Sport Science and Fitness Training-Federation of International Sports, Aerobics and Fitness) Fitness Sports Association
Ladies and Gentlemen

It gives me great pleasure to address you briefly at the Fitness Sport Association’s National Championships. We trust you have had an enjoyable experience competing here in Gauteng Province, the “home of champions”.

It is the IIFT-FISAF Fitness Sports Association's responsibility to present this very popular and exciting IIFT-FISAF National Fitness Sport Championship.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am told that this National Competition has taken place at Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre from the 6th – 9th August 2011. During this four day national championship more than 450 athletes of all ages have participated in various fitness, aerobics and hip hop categories.

The championship also provided the Association an opportunity for selecting the best athletes to represent South Africa at the 2011 World Championship in Gold Coast, Australia.

The championship is a combination of fitness, music, fun and entertainment and offers athletes the opportunity to show off their hard work in training. In addition, it is the highlight of the Association’s development team athletes' year to participate at National championships together with the amateurs and professionals from all over the Country.

Ladies and Gentlemen, IIFT is responsible for education and sport competition activities in South Africa and has been a fully accredited member of FISAF (Federation of International Sports Aerobics and Fitness Inc.) since 1995. Furthermore, IIFT cooperates with Government, tertiary institutions and sport federations countrywide.

It is especially important that we have a national governing body for this branch of activity as fitness provides the foundation for participation in all forms of sports. In this regard, it is very encouraging to find people like you taking the initiative to keep yourselves superbly fit and healthy, and not expect Government to do everything for you.

My Department’s vision is a “a winning nation”, and we all realize that we cannot achieve this without every individual in our country taking care of his or her personal health and fitness. I therefore would like to appeal to every child, youth and adult in South Africa to make the time to participate in at least one physical activity or sport.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I thank you for your attention!
