Passenger dies and scores injured in North West multiple vehicle pile-up

5 Jan 2012

A passenger died and scores others were injured after a truck plunged into six vehicles in a secondary crash on the R30 Derby-Rustenburg road in the North West Province on Wednesday evening.

The crash occurred about 10 kilometers outside Derby towards Rustenburg at around 7:00 pm. It is alleged that the truck that was from Rustenburg driving towards Ventersdorp plunged into the vehicles that were waiting for a tow-truck to recover a G-Force Cash-in transit security truck that had overturned in an earlier accident.

The man who died in the crash believed to be in his late 30's was among the occupants of a minibus taxi that was from Rustenburg on route to Ventersdorp. The number of injured road users is unknown at this stage.

The road was completely closed for over five hours and traffic directed towards the R52 Koster-Rustenburg road as paramedics attended to the injured and accidents experts reconstructed the accident scene for evidence.

Police are investigating a culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the family that lost their loved one in the crash and also wish the injured road users a speedy recovery.

MEC Mohono appeals to motorists to reduce speeding as it accounts for most accidents and unnecessary loss of lives on public roads.
