8 Nov 2011

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has condemned the cold blooded murder of a 27 year old student, Thabo Montshiwa who was shot during a cellphone robbery in Dibate village near Mmabatho in the North West province over the past weekend.

Montshiwa who was a management student at Taletso Further Education and Training College Mmabatho Campus was allegedly walking in the street with two friends at around 20h00 on Friday when they were accosted by a man who demanded their cellphones and money.

Montshiwa allegedly hit the robber with a baseball bat before the robber drew his gun and shot him on the chest .He staggered and fell a few meters as his friends fled for their dear lives.

Though police are investigating the murder, no one has thus far been arrested. Montshiwa from Dithakong village near Kuruman in the Northern Cape was renting a room in Dibate.

MEC Mohono who has described the incident as tragic calls on the community to come up with information that might assist police in their investigations in order for those responsible for the callous crime to be speedily arrested before they commit more crime and bring the lives of innocent people to premature and abrupt end.

MEC Mohono calls for united action against crime to squeeze the scourge of crime to zero because Mahikeng cluster had recorded a 27% increase in murder and 15% increase in robberies with Mmabatho Police Station contributing 3.92% of contact crimes.

The police station stood in the 6th place in top 20 stations that contributed 64, 02 % of contact crimes in the province during the 2010/11 financial year and is among those that need focus attention and intensified crime prevention.
