Home Affairs and South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC)to launch Online Fingerprint Verification System

6 Nov 2011

Home Affairs Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, will together with the Chairperson of the Board of South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) Cas Coovadia, on Tuesday, 8 November 2011 launch the Home Affairs/SABRIC Online Verification System at 11h00 Sheraton Hotel, corner Church and Wessels Str, Pretoria.

The launch is expected to be attended by over 60 representatives of various banks operating in South Africa government officials, particularly those from Home Affairs.

The launch of the system comes against the background of efforts to re-orientate the Home Affairs Department as a security department, firmly rooted within the Justice and Crime Prevention Cluster (JCPS) of government

The system is aimed at fostering co-operation between Home Affairs and SABRIC in combating bank-related identity fraud and corruption that costs banks millions of rand

The system will also witness participation by both the Home Affairs Department and SABRIC in such areas as technological developments in the field of identification of persons and verification of their particulars

This comes within the context of the department’s mandate to protect the identity of South Africans while supporting the national effort to push back the frontiers of fraud and corruption.

In this regard, the Online Fingerprint Verification Model will assist the banks to curb identity related fraud and corruption which currently costs banks and other financial institutions and the economy millions of rands.

The strategic collaboration between the Department of Home Affairs and the banking industry, through SABRIC was endorsed by Cabinet at its meeting on 26 October 2011.

The launch will be attended by MDs of major banking houses – FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Mercantile Bank, African Bank and Capitec Bank - the executive of SABRIC and senior members of the Department of Home Affairs.
