Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the families of five people killed in a road crash, involving a minibus-taxi and a bakkie, on the P74 at KwaDukuza (Stanger) in KwaZulu-Natal earlier today, Friday, 18 September 2009.

According to initial reports, a Nissan bakkie and taxi collided at about 13h00 today, 18 September on the P74 at KwaDukuza, leaving five people dead and several others injured.

“We want to express our condolences to the families and relatives of the five people killed in the road crash at KwaDukuza earlier today, 18 September. Our thoughts and prayers are with these families during these difficult moments. We wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said the Minister.

Meanwhile, Minister Ndebele has called on all road users to exercise extreme caution on the country’s roads, following a spate of road crashes this week, which left several people dead and scores of others injured. In another crash this morning, 18 September, more than 30 prisoners and some warders were injured in a bus crash on the N3 near Balgowan in KwaZulu-Natal. Road crashes were also reported in other provinces during the week.

“As we head towards the week end, we want to make a special plea to all road users to obey all road rules and exercise extreme caution on the roads. In the case of wet road conditions, drivers are urged to reduce their speed and increase their following distance. Road safety is everybody’s responsibility and, together, we must put an end to this unnecessary loss of lives on our roads,” said the Minister.
