The MEC for Community Safety, Advocate Lennit Max, made an urgent appeal to all road users to conscientiously adhere to the road rules, following the horrific head-on collision on the N1 outside Beaufort West in the early hours of this morning.

During the school holidays there are noticeable increases in road traffic on provincial roads and as such drivers must be more considerate towards other road users and be extra vigilant in adhering to the rules of the road, as these rules exist in order to bring everybody safely home.

Max said that the safety and lives of passengers and other road users are in the hands of all drivers. The two major contributors to collisions on our roads are speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. This constitutes reckless behaviour and will not be tolerated.

The safety of all road users is paramount and drivers, together with law enforcement agencies, must ensure that the roads of the Western Cape are safer for all road users.

Max stepped up traffic law enforcement which includes engagement of offenders and immediate issuing of notices, random stop and checks as well as roadblocks this week in anticipation of higher traffic volumes during the long weekend and school holidays.
