Mohono upbeat as four are arrested for business robbery

18 Sep 2011

The swift arrest of four men for business robbery in Phokeng shows that police are determined not give criminals any breathing space as they intensify the onslaught to close the net on their operations, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono said in praisingpolice for a job well done on Sunday.

The arrest happened less than six hours after MEC Mohono had called on police to turn the heat on criminals at the closing of the 7th Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) North West Provincial Congress in Orkney.

Mohono had earlierin the day said that police cannot and must not sit and idle with a massive organisational power and network when society is threatened by heartless gangs and individuals who cause hurt and havoc.

According to police, the owner of the shop was with his workers on Friday and about to close his store when he was confronted by the robbers who threatened them with a firearm. They allegedly forced them to lie down and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in a Toyota Corolla.

After the robbery was reported police managed to trace the car and arrested four men aged between 25 and 32 who were found in possession of the money they had allegedly stolen.

The four men are expected to before the Phokeng Magistrate's Court on Monday to answer to charges of armed robbery.
