Department of Education meeting education stakeholders on school disruptions
5 Sep 2011 The Gauteng Department of Education convened a meeting of the Soweto Education Summit Task Team to discuss recent school disruptions in Meadowlands High and threats that have been made in the public domain to disrupt the preliminary exams and precipitate a wild cat teachers' strike in Soweto.
The organisations present in this meeting were South African Council of Churches (SACC) - Gauteng, Soweto Ministers Fraternal, Methodist Church South Africa, Congress of South African Students - Gauteng, South African National Civics Organisation - Gauteng, ANC Johannesburg Region, SACP Gauteng, SADTU Gauteng, National Association of School Governing Bodies, National Association of Parents in School Governance, MK Military Veterans Association - Gauteng.
The meeting discussed recent events and threats to Soweto School Education in a frank and robust manner.
At the end of the meeting participants recommitted their organisations to the letter and spirit of the Soweto Summit declaration and affirmed that the education of the Soweto learner will not be compromised.
The organisations also distanced themselves from last week's school disruptions and from irresponsible calls to disrupt education and the preliminary exams in the Province.
They agreed unanimously to work amongst their members to prevent any disturbance to learning and teaching at this crucial time of year and ensure that the prelims and all other exams are conducted in a conducive environment.
The Task Team also agreed, that it would convene again next week to assess the climate of learning and teaching in Soweto and deal timeously with any challenges identified.
