Minister saddened by fatal school bus accident

24 Aug 2011

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has reacted with shock and sadness at the death of 14 pupils in a school bus accident in Knysna, Western Cape, this morning.

Reports say a school bus carrying 37 school children on their way to Rheedendal Primary School was swept by floods and plunged into a river in Rheedendal, south of the Cape.

The Department of Basic Education would like to send sincere condolences to the families of the learners, and indeed the entire schooling community.

Officials of the Eden Karoo Education District who include social workers and psychologists are at the scene to counsel surviving learners, parents and staff, and to assist the bereaved families where possible.
