Four injured in N4 tollgate vehicle pile-up

15 Aug 2011

Four road users were injured in a three vehicle pile-up on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway outside Marikana in the North West province on Monday evening.

The accident occurred at the Marikana Plaza Tollgate at around 6:30 pm. It is alleged that the driver of a light canter truck that was from Brits towards Rustenburg failed to stop at the tollgate and plunged into a VW Jetta which then bumped into an Opel Kadet that was on the front of the vehicles queuing for payment of toll fees on the left lane.

Traffic officers from the Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities controlled traffic at the scene traffic until the wreckages and debris are cleared from the lane. ER24 medical personnel treated the injured road users, a passenger from the truck, two passengers from the Jetta and the driver of the Kadet at the scene before taking them to hospital.

The driver of the truck was locked up at Marikana police station as he was
uncooperative to traffic officers at the scene and could not produce a driver’s license. Police are investigating a case of driving a vehicle without a license, reckless and or negligent against the truck driver.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono wishes the injured road users a speedy recovery and appeals to motorists to desist from speeding and to drive with caution.

The accident is the second in the past few weeks at tollgates on the N4. Two women died when a Toyota Corolla plunged into a Toyota Tazz at the Brits Toll Plaza three weeks ago.
