North West Finance Head of Department suspended

25 Jul 2011

The North West Department of Finance Head of Department (HoD) Johannes Mohlala has been suspended with effect from 22 July 2011. This was announced by MEC Louisa Mabe during the press conference held today.

According to Mabe some of the reasons for Mr Mohlala’s suspension are:

  • The relationship of trust with the employer has deteriorated significantly through his unbecoming conduct, to the extent that his continued presence as HoD became unworkable.
  • His lack of compliance with instructions from his superior, the MEC for Finance, created a serious risk to his employer.

MEC announced that Mohlala will be on suspension until internal investigations are complete as this will accord the process to proceed smoothly without hassles. The MEC further said the department will seek assistance from external and independent investigators so that proper processes and procedures are followed.

She however stated that Mr Mohlala is innocent until proven guilty but for the purposes of service delivery he had to be suspended. Mabe also stressed that there is no personal vendetta between herself and the HoD, but the decision she made was in the best interest of the department and the provincial government.

The departmental Accountant General, Mr Geo Paul has been appointed as Acting HoD to ensure that service delivery continues without any disruption.

“I hope that this approach will send a clear message to would-be offenders that corruption and insubordination do not pay” said Mabe.
