Taxi council and minister discuss improved customer service and 2010

20 Aug 2009

The Minister for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, has met with the Western Cape Provincial Taxi Council (WCPTC) to discuss the state of the minibus taxi industry and to further cement co-operative relations between the provincial government and the council.

Minister Carlisle restated the long held provincial policy which recognises the WCPTC as the democratically elected representative of the minibus taxi industry in the province. The meeting, convened at the request of the WCPTC, resolved that:

  • The provincial government will continue to actively support the WCPTC
  • The provincial government welcomed the WCPTC's offer to prepare its own business plan for public transport in general and for the minibus taxi industry in particular
  • This business plan will be interrogated to ensure that it fulfils the requirements and plans of the provincial government
  • The WCPTC will be fully briefed by the provincial 2010 team on current developments related to preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup including the anticipated role of the industry in hosting a successful world cup.

In addition, the minister challenged the WCPTC to dramatically improve its customer service, an element of the industry in dire need of improvement according to official surveys.

Both parties agreed that the meeting strengthened relations between the provincial government and the minibus taxi industry.
