MEC Marawu honours Mandela Day

As part of her contribution to the Nelson Mandela International Day programme, Transport MEC, Thandiswa Marawu joined by Public Works Minister, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, at OR Tambo Technical High School in Nkantolo Village in Mbizana on Monday, 18 July 2011.

For their 67 minutes, the MEC and Minister painted the school window panes and donated furniture and in addition to this initiative, MEC Marawu adopted three schools:

  1. Port St Johns JSS
    • plumbing of educators and learners’ toilets
    • fencing
    • installation of internet access
    • conversion of hall into two classrooms
    • computer lab
  2. Ntshilini JSS (Ngqeleni)
    • plumbing
    • minor repairs
    • access road leading to the school
  3. Sbabalwe JSS (Ugie)
    • plumbing
    • minor repairs
    • computers

The 18 July 2011 also marks the re-introduction of the Eastern Cape Scholar Transport Programme under the stewardship of the Department of Transport following its migration from the Department of Education.

In an effort to ensure smooth start of the programme, MEC Marawu is expected to make unannounced visits to Scholar Transport focused Operation Asihleki roadblocks to be held throughout the province, to monitor compliance by service providers, which includes having:

  • current operating licences
  • public drivers permit
  • certificates of fitness
  • public passenger liability cover, which is very important.
