Second suspect arrested in connection with the murder of two policemen

31 May 2011

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Bheki Cele, has congratulated the Hawks in the Western Cape in connection with the arrest of a second suspect in connection with the killing of two policemen in Kraaifontein. The suspect was traced to the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town where he is being treated for a gunshot wound. He is under police guard.

On Friday, Sivuyile Sangovana (22) appeared at the Blue Downs Magistrate Court in connection with the murder. His case has been postponed to the 3rd of June. Sangovana was arrested at Groote Schuur Hospital. He was also being treated for a bullet wound.

Warrant Officer Matthee and Constable Cloete were on patrol in Wallacedene in Kraaifontein when they responded to a complaint by two members of the public. While they attempted to gain entry to the shack a vehicle stopped a few metres in front of the police van. A male occupant of the vehicle got out of the car and shots were fired at the two policemen from behind them, wounding both in the head. Both members were robbed of their Z88 9mm pistols.

The latest suspect to be arrested is a 22 year old male. He will appear in court immediately after recuperating.
