Media statement by MEC Joyce Mashamba Mapungubwe Music Festival 2010

13 Dec 2010

It is all systems go for this year’s Mapungubwe Festival on 16 and the 18 December 2010. Ticket sales are progressing at a satisfactory rate and all other logistics are in place for a successful and enjoyable event at the Polokwane Cricket Club.

Reports to the contrary, are definitely malicious and are an attempt by certain individuals to derail the process, for whatever reasons they might have. The festival has in mind to unite us as South Africans and we once again call on all our people from Limpopo, South Africa and beyond, to support the feast of local and national talent that will be on display at the Mapungubwe Music Festival
2010.

South Africa and Limpopo’s most acclaimed and celebrated gospel and traditional artists like Winnie Mashaba, Benjamin Dube, Rebecca Malope, Worship House and many more will be entertaining crowds on Thursday, 16 December 2010, starting from 11h00.

On this, Reconciliation Day, we wish to invite guests from all cultures and all walks of life to join us and celebrate with us, in the spirit of togetherness.  The main aim of this festival is, after all, to foster social cohesion and nation building and to rekindle and maintain the spirit of social cohesion observed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

We have included in the line-up of 18 December 2010, artists from a wide range of genres, including jazz, kwaito, house, R&B and Pop. With artists like Jimmy Dludlu, HHP, Danny K, Karen Zoid, Mavericks, Jonas Gwangwa, Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Malaika, Rythmic Elements and Sello Galane, to name but a few, there is also something for every citizen of this country.  The Festival starts at 12:00 and will continue well into the next morning. The line-up for both events includes 55% local artists.

We have, in previous years welcomed visitors from the SADC region to the Mapungubwe Festival, which is generally perceived as not
only an event for Limpopo and South Africa, but for all of southern
Africa. This year we will once again be welcoming our brothers and sisters from the SADC region countries to the festivities.

Let us conclude this successful and exciting year in the history of South Africa, on a high note at the Mapungubwe Festival. Come one, come all!
