Vast majority of Western Cape learners able to write the annual national assessments

8 Feb 2011

This morning, the vast majority of Grade 2 to 7 and Grade 9 learners in the Western Cape was able to write the annual national assessment tests set by the national Department of Basic Education.

Early signs indicate that in excess of 90 percent of the learners wrote the test. The final figure will be confirmed once all the districts have reported back to head office later today.

The fact that so many were able to write the test is in large part due to the extraordinary efforts made by our officials in the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

Officials worked around the clock this weekend and yesterday to ensure that as many assessment tests were printed and correctly distributed to schools that had yet to receive them from the national distribution and in the relevant languages as per school policy.

I would like to thank them for their efforts in this regard.

It is unfortunate that this situation did arise, however, we believe we did all we could to minimise the impact on the testing process.

It is also regrettable that there are reported errors in the tests. We will be discussing this, and the other challenges that have arisen, such as shortages of testing papers, with the national department in the near future.
