ECDoE offers failed matriculants counseling services

6 Jan 2011

The Eastern Cape department of Education MEC, the honourable Mandla Makhuphula has prioritised learners who have not made it through their examinations by offering district based counseling services to them.

This counseling service will accordingly assist these learners to manage stress and improper behaviour which can lead to some learners taking their lives. The bone of contention to the department is to ensure that lives are saved and alarm is ringed on the consequences of not accepting these examination results and use the available second chance.

The service is part of the department’s plan on dealing with the examination results stress related incidents and includes a call to parents to help these learners should they identify strange symptoms through talking to them about the dangers of bottling down their stress.

It is the aim of the department’s aim to raise awareness of how examinations stress manifests itself among students and to assist them by offering services on how to best manage it.  Departmental officials will be on standby readily available to assist these learners in each district. In anticipation of other factors affecting these learners during this time, these services will be extended to learners’ family members as well.

Officials dispatched to offer support to learners will include learning support coordinators, remedial advisors, therapists and psychologists.  Their services will be available free of charge from today during office hours until the supplementary examinations are over.
