Residents along the Crocodile (Mgwenya) River warned to be on alert as River flow increases

6 Jan 2011

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga would like to warn all residents living along and downstream the Crocodile (Mgwenya) river such as Kanyamazane, Matsulu and Nkomazi to be on full alert as the Kwena Dam that feeds the Crocodile River is more than 105% full and already overflowing into the river. The over flow into the Crocodile river has increased the river flow which was already high. The department would also like to warn residents living along and downstream the Elands river especially Machadodorp and the surrounding farms to be on alert as this river is also full.

The continued rains have resulted in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams very dangerous. Parents are urged to warn children not to play next to streams and rivers. The department has also instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and on standby for any possible floods. Weather patterns indicate that rains will continue for the next few days.

The department would also like to urge communities and members of the public to be extremely cautious at all times. In the event of possible flooding communities must call the Department’s Disaster toll free number 0800 202 507.
