Director-General for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities appointed

28 Oct 2010

Department gets budget for appointment of key staff

The Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, welcomes the appointment of the first Director-General for the Department for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities (DWCPD) and welcomes budget adjustment that will allow for the appointment of other key strategic officials.

Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize was confirmed by Cabinet yesterday as the Director-General for the department with immediate effect.

Dr Mkhize brings with her a vast experience in both the academic and public sector focusing on issues of women, children and persons with disabilities.

She worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Zululand for ten year (1987-1997) and held a senior management position in the Department of Arts and Culture before joining the Office of the Premier in KwaZulu-Natal in 2002 where she was in charge of the offices responsible for the Status of Women and Disabled Persons, Rights of Children and Older Persons as well as Youth Affairs.

As a Deputy Director-General, she was seconded to the Ministry for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities to lead the process of establishing governance systems and support the implementation of the strategic plan for the new department.

Minister Mayende-Sibiya hailed the appointment of Dr Mkhize as the first Director-General of the DWCPD saying that the appointment “brings much needed stability at an operational and management level”.

“The past year has been challenging without a stable management structure. Confirmation of this appointment by Cabinet provides a great opportunity for the effective implementation of our vision to mainstream gender, disability and children’s rights considerations in government and society at large.

“We are also expecting the confirmation of the appointment of Deputy Directors General very soon. That should provide me with an adequate team of officials to fully confront the task assigned to me by government,” said Minister Mayende-Sibiya.

During the Mid-term Budget Statement yesterday, a human resource budget adjustment of R8 million for the Ministry was announced allowing for the filling of strategic posts including heads of departmental branches responsible for women, children and persons with disabilities as well as corporate services.
