Media statement on the appointment of advisers

The Presidency wishes to announce the appointment of the following persons as advisers to President Jacob Zuma:

1. Mr Charles Nqakula as Political Adviser
2. Mr Mandisi Mpahlwa as Economic Adviser
3. Ambassador Lindiwe Zulu as International Relations Adviser
4. Advocate Bonisiwe Makhene as Legal Adviser

Ms Ayanda Dlodlo, Member of Parliament, has been appointed as Parliamentary Counsellor to the President.

The advisers bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Presidency and will add much value to the President's determination to bring about faster change and improved service delivery.

Background

Mr Nqakula has served as Minister of Safety and Security and Minister of Defence and also served previously as Parliamentary Counsellor to the former President of the Republic Mr Thabo Mbeki.

Mr Mpahlwa has served as Minister of Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Finance in the previous administrations. Ms Zulu a member of the ANC National Executive Committee has worked in the international relations sphere for several years. She served as Ambassador to Brazil until December, after which she joined the ANC in Luthuli House as a spokesperson during the election campaign.

Ms Dlodlo is a member of the ANC National Executive Committee and is the Secretary General of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association. Ms Makhene is currently deputy chief state law adviser in the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and will be seconded to the Presidency to perform the legal advisory role.

Mr Mpahlwa, Mr Nqakula and Ms Zulu will resign from Parliament to take up the positions.
