Communications Minister to launch and handover websites for national hospitals as well launching a documentary on Mr Thabo Mofutsanyane

21 Sep 2010

The Minister of Communications, General (Ret) Siphiwe Nyanda will host the launch of the hospital websites on 30 September 2010 in Bloemfontein, Free State province. The Minister will hand over 180 websites developed by Department of Communications, to the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. The launch of the website will be succeeded by the launch of a documentary as well as memorial lecture on the South African Communist Party stalwart Thabo Mofutsanyane from the Free State.

The launch of the websites emanated from the Information Society and Development Inter-Governmental Relations Forum, where the Minister of Communications meets with two MECs from each province and other senior officials to ensure ICTs are on the agenda of the Integrated Development Plans of provinces.

The department developed websites for district hospitals in seven provinces as part of the e-Connectivity Plan for Health Centres as part of the department’s Strategic Plan. These websites are developed in partnership with the National Department of Health and Provincial health departments. The project seeks to produce websites for hospitals in order to publicise health information for citizen empowerment country wide.

The websites were designed and developed by different 19 e-Cooperatives established by the department in different provinces, to implement and promote the use and uptake of information and communication technology (ICT) tools for socio-economic development.

The documentary on Mr Thabo Mofutsanyane emanates from one of the strategic targets of the Department of Communications, the National Digital Repository on Cultural Heritage. The strategic thrust of this initiative is to collect, capture, preserve and disseminate South Africa Culture and Heritage using modern ICTs.

It will also demonstrate the intricacies of his life and the people he has influenced and impacted upon in South Africa. The memorial lecture will have panellists that will share the impact of Mr Mofutsanyane in their lives. This will be followed by the unveiling of the documentary.
