2010 Arbour Day celebration
9 Sep 2010
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Forestry (DAFF) in collaboration with the Limpopo Departments of Agriculture (LDA), Public Works (LDPW), Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) will host the 2010 Arbour Day Celebration.
Limpopo's MECs for Agriculture, Public Works, Economic Development, Environment and Tourism; Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, Mr George Phadagi and Mr Pitsi Moloto will lead the celebration. Premier Cassel Mathale is expected to give a keynote address.
The 2010 Arbour Day Celebration will be hosted under theme: "Plant for the Planet, Grow Green".
The following messages together with the theme will be communicated:
- Contribute to the million trees programme by planting a tree during Arbour Week.
- If we do not plant them today, how will future generations know?
- Plant trees and say no to desertification.
- Greening helps create a healthy and dignified environment.
- Uncontrolled veld and forest fires destroy life- prevent them.
- Besides being the Lungs of the Earth, trees provide economic and social benefits for nations and fruit trees help alleviate hunger and poverty.
Arbour Day aims at raising awareness about the importance of trees, hence Premier Mathale initiated a greening Limpopo last year. On this basis, the MEC for Public Works was entrusted to lead with the aim of getting Limpopo green, job creation and fruit trees to augment the programme of food security.
Ever since it was launched, an operational plan has been produced and a number of trees have been planted and all the activities are happening within the auspices of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Forestry greening strategy and Greening Limpopo programme.
The day will also be used to educate communities on conservation of protected trees, particularly Marula and lead-wood to reduce the deforestation taking place in that area.
It is anticipated that this will serve as a campaign to make people that cut trees at an alarming rate aware that such may ultimately lead to an undesirable desertification.
