A worker dies after plunging seven metres down in Hammanskraal

20 Jul 2010

The Labour Department in Gauteng is investigating the fatal injury of a male employee (30) who fell 7 metres down to the ground at a construction site of a new Jubilee mall in Hammanskraal today, 20 July. Labour inspectors are currently at the scene of the accident to investigate the cause of accident and whether occupational health and safety standards were complied with at the time of the accident.

Should the accident be negligence of the employer to take precautionary measures and or having failed to comply with the prescriptions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) he or she will face prosecution. Investigations by labour Inspectors are still underway.

The department urges workers to take full charge of their workplace health and safety at all times to avoid unnecessary injuries and fatalities.
