Modiselle and other North West leaders assemble at Lekgotla

26 May 2009

North West Premier, Maureen Modiselle will be joined by MECs, Mayors, municipal managers, heads of parastatals and heads of provincial departments at an Executive Committee (EXCO) Lekgotla near Orkney. This Lekgotla, which takes place on Monday, 1 June 2009 and ends on Tuesday, 2 June 2009, will seek to develop an integrated programme of action for the province.

This will be the first EXCO Lekgotla since the 22 April 2009 elections which returned the African National Congress (ANC) to power with an overwhelming majority. It is expected that this Lekgotla will seek to translate the electoral mandate of the ruling party into a clear programme of action for the provincial government.

Announcing her Cabinet recently, Premier Modiselle expressed confidence that her team was equal to the task of discharging its mandate to the people of the North West in line with the priorities of the next five years. Among other things, EXCO Lekgotla will focus on the following key priorities: education, health, rural development, the fight against crime and corruption, as well as the creation of decent work and sustainable livelihoods.

EXCO Lekgotla will stress the need for co-ordination, integration and synergy in policy implementation and service delivery. Premier Modiselle has already expressed the need for better and more focused co-ordination of the delivery programmes of different spheres, departments and institutions of government.

Accordingly, effective alignment between the strategies of the three spheres of government (national, provincial and local) will constitute a key theme during the deliberations. EXCO Lekgotla will pay serious attention to the need for increasing the pace and quality of service delivery.

Building on the solid foundation that has been laid over the past fifteen years, EXCO will further explore ways of ensuring faster and more effective implementation of the priorities that have been identified.

The provincial Lekgotla comes a week after the National Cabinet Lekgotla which is currently taking place in Pretoria.
