Communities to clean Gauteng province as part of World Environment Day celebrations

3 Jun 2010

Communities across Gauteng province committed to clean their areas during the World Environment Day celebrations on 5 June 2010.

Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and municipalities is embarking on clean-ups and greening activities on the day to ensure that the province celebrates its commitment to protecting the environment.

As the environment celebrations are during Youth Month, we are calling on young people in particular to not only participate in the activities, but to lead in taking environmental issues beyond the day's celebrations.

This is because the effect of the environment will be felt by future generations.

The clean-ups will coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup because as government, we believe that we need to welcome our international soccer loving communities into an environment that is clean and healthy.

For this reason, we are calling on all communities to embark on clean-ups within their residential areas.

Venues for clean-ups within municipalities are as follows:

Ekurhuleni
* Venue: Tembisa High School
* Led by: executive mayor of Johannesburg, MEC, MMCs and MD of Pick-it-Up; 74 areas identified within all the wards of the municipality

Metsweding
* Venue: Kameeldrift Plot 175, ward five (informal settlement), Nokeng tsa Taemane
* Led by: executive district mayor and MMCs

Sedibeng
* Venue: Midvaal, ward eight, Secelo stadium
* Led by: executive district mayor

Tshwane
* Venues: Lotus Garden, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, Doornpoort, Soshanguve, Garankuwa and Olivenhoutbosch
* Led by: Executive mayor

West Rand
* Venue: Mohlakeng Township, ward 11, Ramosa hall

It starts with you. Let us all continue with this good work even beyond the 2010 World Cup.

Love Gauteng, Keep it clean! Working Together we can do More!
