Executive management hearts and minds connected in Kokstad

4 Jun 2010

Kokstad Correctional Centre, the best high security correctional centre in South Africa, on Thursday, 3 May 2010 successfully hosted an executive management retreat convened by the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane.

Commissioner Moyane convened the two day session in the KwaZulu-Natal region to discuss the strategic direction of the department, to improve service delivery and to promote accountability. The session lived up to expectations with the national commissioner, chief deputy commissioners, the chief of staff and regional commissioners agreeing that with "passion and a sense of achievement" everything is possible when a team works together.

The commissioner urged the executive management to help "redeem our esteem", build trust, ensure speedy and qualitative delivery and reports, as well as being fully accountable for one's actions.

He described mediocrity, lethargic (sluggish) and poor quality work as well as errors made on matters of principle, as "non-negotiables" that will be dealt with without fear of favour.

Citing the example of Harrismith Correctional Centre where 41 remand detainees escaped, he said: "I am not going to condone negligence".

The commissioner hastened to say those who work beyond the call of duty will be appropriately recognised.

Commissioner Moyane added by saying: "for too long we have been seating in comfort positions. It is about time that we must implement many policies we have developed. Managers must not be afraid to take decisions. I also expect every person to apply his or her mind and do his or her best. We must do things smarter".

The commissioner's retreat follows a successful and pioneering teleconference meeting with thousands of staff members nationally.

The meeting was followed by a tour of Kokstad correctional centre and will be concluded with a meeting and another tour of Durban Westville Correctional Centre on Friday, 4 June 2010.

Commissioner Moyane has pledged to visit all regions.
