10 Jun 2010

A two months old baby died and 40 passengers were injured after a Vaal Maseru bus overturned on the R24 Rustenburg-Krugersdorp road this morning. Fatigue is suspected to have caused the accident that occurred near Waaggenpadspruit, about 40 kilometres from Rustenburg at around 5h30. The bus was transporting passengers from Krugersdorp to Rustenburg.

The driver alleges that he was avoiding another vehicle that was overtaking. The bus overturned on the opposite right hand lane. All the injured passengers, four of whom were in a critical condition, three serious while 33 suffered minor injuries including the driver were taken treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Job Shimankane Tabana Provincial Hospital for further medical attention and treatment.

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa wishes to convey his condolences to the family of the baby and wish the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
