Official visits to South Africa by foreign government leaders, 2012
Visits in 2011
Official visits to South Africa by leaders of governments with whom South Africa has diplomatic ties form an important part of the country's international relations.
- President Pratibha Patil of India: State Visit, 2 May
President Patil will meet President Zuma to discuss bilateral relations between South Africa and India. The two presidents will also address a business forum in Pretoria involving South African business people and their Indian counterparts.
- President Joyce Banda of Malawi, 27 Apr
President Banda is paying her first official visit to South Africa following her inauguration as President. President Zuma and his counterpart will exchange views on issues of mutual interest and common concern, paying particular attention to the economic challenges facing Malawi.
- Italian Minister of Interior, Annamaria Cancellieri, 16 to 18 April
Minister Cancellieri held discussions with Ministers of Police Nathi Mthethwa and Home Affairs Dlamini Zuma.
- Panama Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Francisco Alvarez de Soto, 16 to 21 April
This is the first high-level bilateral visit from Panama to South Africa since full diplomatic relations were established on 10 January 1995. The visit focuses on the strengthening of political and economic relations between South Africa and Panama.
- Minister of Defence Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman Sayyid Bader Bin Saud Bin Harib Al-Busaidi, 13 March
The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Minister of Defence Affairs in Oman, HE Sayyid Bader Bin Saud Bin Harib Al-Busaidi on Defence Cooperation through exchange of experiences and knowledge between the two countries.
- Foreign Affairs Minister of Somalia Abdullahi Haji Hassan Mohamed, 13 to 14 March
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane received His Excellency Abdullahi Haji Hassan Mohamed at the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria, where the two Ministers signed an agreement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between South Africa and Somalia.
- Minister of External Affairs of Sri Lanka, Prof. Gamini Lakshman Peiris, 5 March
Minister Peiris was expected to brief Minister Nkoana-Mashabane on political, economic and social developments in Sri Lanka, especially following the release of the Report of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) in November 2011.
- United Kingdom Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague, 13 to 14 February
The meeting was held to discuss progress within the context of the Bilateral Forum between South Africa and the United Kingdom as well as the South Africa-United Kingdom Strategy adopted at the last meeting of the Bilateral Forum in London in June 2011.
