  • Certificate for Conflict Resolution at Harvard University (1990).
  • Diploma from the Wharton School of Economics.
  • Studied with UNISA and the London School of Economics.

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities
  • Joined the Black Peoples Convention (1973).
  • Joined the South African Student's Movement (SASM).
  • Detained for seven months in 1976.
  • Founding member of AZAPO-Chairperson of Soweto Branch (1979- 1980).
  • Leading member of the Soweto Students' Representative Council and member of the Committee of Ten during the Soweto Rebellion (1982- 1984).
  • Arrested in 1981 and 1984.
  • A key figure in the formation of the United Democratic Front (UDF) (1983).
  • National Secretary for the UDF (1983).
  • Involved in a trial when 22 activists were arrested and charged with terrorism, high treason, subversion, five counts of murder and promoting the aims and objectives of a banned organisation (primarily the ANC) (1985).
  • Received 10-year jail sentence in 1988, but released on appeal in 1989.
  • Became Deputy Chairperson of the ANC's Pretoria/Witwatersrand/Vaal region after the unbanning of the ANC in 1990.
  • Key member of the reception committee for Mr Mandela's release (1990).
  • Played a crucial role in building ANC structures (1991- 1992).
  • Appointed Chairperson of the 80th anniversary celebration of the ANC.
  • Deputy Head of the National Organising Department of the ANC.
  • Head of the ANC's Election Department (June 1992).
