Pandemic influenza A/H1N1

  • Pandemic influenza H1N1 hotline: 0861 DOH CDC or 0861 364 232
  • Department of Health e-mail: H1N1@health.gov.za

Pandemic influenza A/H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This virus is spreading from person to person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

The first death as a result of AH1N1 influenza (Swine Flu) in South Africa, occurred on 28 July.

Symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and include:

  • fever
  • fatigue
  • lack of appetite
  • coughing
  • sore throat
  • pain in muscles and joints
  • headache and chills
  • some people with swine flu have also reported vomiting and diarrhoea.

Guidelines

These guidelines describe the symptoms of H1N1 flu, how to protect yourself and what to do when you contract the disease. For more information, contact your nearest clinic or hospital.

Government regularly issues statements to keep the public informed on the status of swine flu in South Africa.
