Mpumalanga Presidential Imbizo, Ehlanzeni District Municipality

21 - 22 June 2008

President Thabo Mbeki held a two-day Imbizo from Saturday, 21 June 2008 to Sunday, 22 June 2008 at Ehlanzeni District Municipality in Mpumalanga province.

This visit by President Mbeki forms part of government's Imbizo Programme aimed at promoting government interaction with communities across the country.

Ehlanzeni District Municipality in Mpumalanga comprises of Thaba Chweu, Mbombela, Umjindi, Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge local municipalities. The executive mayor of Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Councillor Khosi Mkhonto, reported to the President that the five local municipalities face huge challenges in meeting basic service delivery. According to 2007 Community Survey, the district has 387 317 households.

The first day of the President's visit focused on the District's preparations and the readiness for the 2010 Fifa World Cup .The Mbombela Local Municipality assured the President that all preparations are on track and the construction of the Mbombela Soccer Stadium will finish as scheduled.

On the second day of Imbizo, thousands of Ehlanzeni community thronged the local kwaMhlushwa Stadium where they urged the President to intervene and strengthen local government to meet their service delivery mandate.
