Imbizo Focus Week

7 - 13 October 2002

The theme of this Imbizo, the third Focus Week since the launch of the initiative in 2001, was Lend a Hand to Protect Children's Rights. Its emphasis was on registration for child grants. It also co-incided with Public Service Week and Social Development Month [PDF].

Over 320 activities were held, through which all spheres of government - national, provincial and local, through members of the Cabinet, Provincial Executives and Municipal Councils - were in direct communication with the public in all the provinces across South Africa. At many of the events there were temporary registration sites to register those who were eligible for child support grants. In this way government helped translating into practical action the President's call at the beginning of the year for "massive mobilisation around registration for social grants".
