Limpopo Presidential Imbizo
25 - 27 April 2001
President Mbeki visited the Northern Province*
from 25 to 27 April 2001.The visit was part of the Presidential
Imbizo programme aimed at promoting interactive
governance, so that government could get a better sense of the
reality and of the progress that is being made, and to hear from
the people about their concerns and the problems they face.
It is being done so that government can respond better to the
problems and fulfil its commitment to work to ensure that the
people of the Northern Province and the whole of South Africa
lead a better life. An important message was that all of
government - traditional leaders, municipal councils, provincial
MECs, Premiers, Ministers and the President - should communicate
and work together with the people in the spirit of Imbizo.
The President paid visits to the Marobala citrus farm, where
previous farm labourers are now owners of the land on which they
produced fruit, and to Malope Village where running water was
provided to the village. At Jane Furse he found dedicated
doctors, nurses and administrators caring for their patients in
run-down hospital buildings, while the pupils of Phiri-ea-gae
school did not have educators to teach science and mathematics,
and also did not have electricity and water.
