Social programmes

Early Childhood Development

Children from birth to nine years old need special support for optimal physical, mental and emotional development. Children who have participated in an early childhood development programme, through a properly run crèche or pre-school, have a great advantage over those who have not been exposed to these stimulating learning environments. Such programmes also help parents and caregivers to become actively involved in the development of their children.

Home/Community-Based Care

The Home Community-Based Programme provides health and social services to vulnerable people in their homes, and trains formal and informal caregivers to administer these services.  Through the programme, trainees learn to:

  • identify those in need, such as orphans, the disabled, and the chronically ill
  • link these vulnerable families with poverty-relief programmes and services
  • care for the physical needs of people living with AIDS and other patients
  • counsel and comfort the distressed, sick or suffering
  • help with family planning, burials and accessing grants, and other services.

The course is SETA-accredited. Successful trainees can start a facility, apply for a Home Community-Based Care grant to run the facility, and train others to work as Home Community-Based Caregivers.

The following groups of people qualify to receive help on this programme:

  • HIV-positive people who do not receive a state grant
  • Adult dependants of a person who is terminally ill
  • Unemployed people from a household with an income of less that R1 5000 per month.
