Environmental programmes
Working for Water
Through this Programme, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry aims to sustain the prevention and control of invasive alien plants, thereby optimising the conservation and use of natural resources. The Department also aims to address poverty relief and promote economic empowerment and transformation within a public works' framework.
The Department focuses on:
- facilitating planned and systematic prevention and control of invasive alien plants
- optimising the social and economic benefits possible through the manner in which our work is done
- establishing an effective and efficient learning organisation.
Job opportunities include those for unemployed women and men in or close to the approximate 300 project sites nationally. There is a specific focus on recruiting female heads of household (60%), youth (25%) and the disabled (targeting 5%, currently at 1%). A secondary industry to the Working for Water Programme has created the opportunity for individuals to start their own businesses manufacturing furniture from alien vegetation. Unemployed people, mainly women, in the vicinity of a project are hired by the Working for Water Programme.
Contractors and workers are selected through local consultative processes in mainly deep rural, rural and peri-urban communities. Working for Water has a substantial presence in the 12 poverty nodes nationally. Once contractors and workers have undergone an initial training phase, the clearing contracts are offered in a closed contracting system using the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry Tender Procurement Procedures.

Working for Wetlands
The Working for Wetlands Programme is a labour-intensive initiative to conserve and restore wetlands in South Africa. The Programme aims to provide advice and assistance to those with wetlands on their properties. It is also part of the Government's commitment to pro-poor interventions, and particularly the provision of work in the Expanded Public Works Programme. Working for Wetlands is to be administered through the National Biodiversity Institute, under the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, in partnership with the departments of Water Affairs and Forestry and of Agriculture.

Working for Fire
Working for Fire is a labour-intensive initiative to develop an integrated capacity to prevent and manage wild fires in South Africa. Unemployed people are trained to work as fire fighters in the Working for Fire Programme.
The main objectives of the Programme are to:
- limit the effect of veld fires on poor communities in areas exposed to such fires
- create opportunities for labour-intensive work in the preparation of fire-protection measures in the participating Fire Protection Associations (FPAs) e.g. clear invading alien plants, create firebreaks and reduce fuel-load
- develop skills, capacity and opportunities in affected communities.
