The seventh session of African Ministers' Council On Water (AMCOW) and the second Africa Water Week (AWW-2) to be hosted in South Africa in November 2009

9 to 13 November 2009
African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) consists of all fifty three (53) African Ministers with responsibility for water resources, and it was formally launched in Abuja, Nigeria on April 30, 2002, under the Chairmanship of H.E. Shehu Shagari, Minister of Water Resources of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The mission of AMCOW is to provide political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources for sustainable social and economic development and maintenance of African ecosystems and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation to address the water and sanitation issues in Africa.
South Africa will assume the Chairmanship of AMCOW during the 7th regular Session of AMCOW which will be held back-to-back with the second Africa Water Week in South Africa from 9 – 13 November 2009. The Africa Water Week is an annual event and the theme for the second Africa Water Week is “Carrying forward the commitments of the Sharm El-Sheikh AU Summit on Water and Sanitation: a “Sprint to the Finish Line”. The first Africa Water Week (AWW1) was held in Tunisia during 2008.
The Department of Water Affairs, in South Africa is responsible for the preparations and had secured Gallagher Convention Centre, in Midrand as the venue for this event. The African Ministers in charge of Water are expected to attend this event together with their senior officials from their respective Ministries responsible for Water.
There will be other stakeholders and strategic partners of AMCOW viz; the UN family, World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme Africa, African Development Bank, EC, Global Water Partnership (GWP), WaterAid, G8, Civil Society, River Basin organizations, water operations and other collaborators from different organizations across the continent and the world will also attend the AWW-2.
The AWW-1 held in Tunisia, was attended by approximately 550 delegates from across the continent, and it is expected that the AWW-2 will attract more than 700 delegates. The implications in hosting a big event means that, a lot of planning around issues such as security, transport and accommodation should be carried out in consultation with relevant stakeholders within the Government sector as well as private sector.
The Chief Directorate: International Relations has been tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that all the logistical arrangements are in place, hence the need for a wider consultation with different sections within the Department as well as other key departments.
