16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children

16 days

25 November - 10 December

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations campaign. It takes place annually from the 25th November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to the 10th December (International Human Rights Day). This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates, including 29 November, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day; 1 December, World AIDS Day; and 6 December; which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Since 1999 the South African Government has run a parallel campaign that includes issues relating to violence against children. This campaign focuses primarily on generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children as well as society as a whole.

Government is committed to building a South Africa that truly cares for women and children. The 16 Days of Activism effort is led by Deputy Minister of Provincial and Local Government, Ms Nomatyala Hangana, whose vision is to take the campaign to the people at grassroots level and beyond the borders of South Africa. Strategic partnerships between government, civil society, business and the media are broadening the campaign’s impact and thousands of South Africans supported it last year, increasing awareness of abuse and building support for victims and survivors.
